Wood Turning Active Demonstration
We are delighted that Micahel Ashton is coming to FCA on the 5th October for a Crafternoon Tea. He will be giving a talk on the history of the lathe along with a demonstration and opportunity to have a go if you wish.
Michael will be demonstrating woodturning on a pole lathe which is the earliest form of lathe dating back to the Iron age and uses foot power to turn green (unseasoned) wood into useful household items and furniture parts. The wood will be prepared using a side axe and draw knife straight from the log so the whole process can be seen from start to finish.
Michael now continues the craft started by our ancestors making a range of classic Windsor chairs along with other household items. From chairs to goblets and bowls to spoons, all items are turned on the Pole Lathe or hand carved using green British wood and green woodworking tools.
